The Bufflehead is one of the smallest of the sea duck group. They dive underwater to catch aquatic invertebrates and spend half their life underwater. In flight, you can identify them by noting their small size, fast wingbeats, and pattern of rocking side-to side as they fly. No one has ever accused a hen bufflehead of being particularly colorful.
When I paint my hen I want to make my color choices rich and apply my paint in such a way that I achieve a sense of depth and softness. This hen is carved out of two pieces of Tupelo. It has three small inserted feathers, it was created in December 2016 and took 46 hours to complete.
